A boxing gym that puts fitness first, specializing in amateur boxing, professional boxing, kids boxing, and women's boxing.

DeMotte Boxing Club, nestled away behind a cluster of trees on Highway 10 just off of 1-65 in Northwest Indiana, fills a much-needed void for people of all fitness levels. Anyone looking to take their fitness routine to a new level can find a group of like-minded individuals, boxing gloves laced, mouth pieces perfectly formed, smacking leather on leather to the beat of Eye of The Tiger (or some other cleverly chosen adrenaline-pumping tune). The gym caters to those who are looking for a new fitness routine, as well as to amateurs and professionals who are looking to get in shape, stay in shape, or test out their skills in the ring.

Purpose of DeMotte Boxing Club

While competition is an encouraged option, fitness is the main goal of all who enter the doors. Founded in September 2008, the DeMotte Boxing Club provides a safe, friendly environment that promotes fitness, encourages self-discipline, and teaches an entirely different set of skills than the typical fitness class. With the objective of providing affordable training, the gym keeps its membership prices moderate, with discounts for students and families.

The Set-Up of the Boxing Gym

Entering the locally owned gym, a visitor can expect to walk into a room equipped with a full-wall mirror, speed bags, punching bags and medicine balls. Ahead lays the boxing ring, for the member who is ready to assess their newly acquired skills by sparring another member, or possibly even a coach. After rounding the corner, two more sections are dedicated to cardio-styled workout stations. A dressing room, available for use by all members, completes the back half of the DeMotte Boxing Club. Personal touches are abundant, with nostalgic fight posters adorning the walls, as well as a Muhammad Ali mural hand-painted by rising local artist Chris Guzman.

The Fitness Workout

With fists flying, sweat rolling, and bells signaling round changes, all facets of the gym are being utilized at the same time. A typical workout for a beginning member may start with a short one-on-one session, with coaching on proper form and how to receive the maximum benefits at each station. The member is then allowed to reinforce these new skills by completing a specified number of reps or amount of time at each station. Even a beginner is taught proper boxing form at all times to push past the barrier of mediocrity.

While time in the ring is a necessity for those who want to participate in shows, compete in the Golden Gloves, or eventually turn professional, sparring is allowed only when a member is ready both physically and mentally.

Indiana Golden Gloves 2009

Twelve members of the DeMotte Boxing Club accompanied the club on its first trip to the Indiana Golden Gloves in April 2009. Of the twelve, six members came back Golden Glove Champions: Josh Broertjes, Robert Slepcevich, Charles Wheat, Nick Craig, Jacob Tillger and Jeremy Hepworth. The Coach of the Year Award was also graciously accepted by the coaching staff.

Current gym hours are Monday and Thursdays from 5:00pm to 7:00pm and Saturdays from 10:30am to 12:00pm. Pricing and information can be obtained by calling The DeMotte Boxing Club at 219-987-2066.
